The way of St. james

The way of St. james

Arzúa is home to the main Jacobean pilgrimage route, the so-called French Way, which crosses the lands of the village from east to west.

The French Way to Compostela crosses the municipality from east to west. It enters Arzúa through the parish of Boente, where we are received by the Fonte da Saleta and continues in the parish of A Castañeda, which already appeared in the Codex Calixtinus under the name of Castaniolla. The Jacobean document highlights that the ovens that were used in the construction of the Compostela cathedral were located in this place. It was the pilgrims themselves who, as a penance, brought the limestone to Castañeda after being collected at Triacastela.

After passing Castañeda, the Camino de Santiago leads the pilgrim to the Iso river and, after crossing the medieval bridge, they arrive to Ribadiso, where one of the council's hostels is located.

The Ribadiso hostel was stabished in 1993 as the result of the rehabilitation of the old Ribadiso pilgrims' hospital where for centuries a charfity cared for walkers, according to a document from 1523.

Another identical case is that of the hostel located in the town of Arzúa, next to the hermitage of A Madalena. It was built in the 15th century as the pilgrims' hospital of the convent of the Augustinian friars.
